Display Industry - This event, produced in cooperation with SMPTE, takes place on Saturday and Sunday, 5-6 April in Las Vegas, NV, just prior to the opening of the 2014 NAB SHOW. The focus is on the future of imaging and sound for cinema and provides an in-depth global view of the current state and future of filmmaking innovation.SMPTE logo 120x100

One of the main themes of the event is the trends and issues with image quality in the cinema. While 4K/UHD resolution TVs are a hot topic of discussion, 4K has been in the cinema for many years. There is much debate about the value proposition of more pixels in the theater. Given the distances between most viewers and the screen the additional pixels in a 4K image is normally only visible from the first few rows – typically not thought to be the best seats in the house.

New advancements in color gamut via laser sources, increased dynamic range and contrast and increases in the frame rate are all now possible, including even more pixels – think 8K.  The big debate in the industry – and one which will be discussed extensively at this event, is which improvement offers the best value for the consumer (or the industry, depending on your perspective).

If you want to learn more about these issues, consider attending this event.  Below are a few of the sessions where this topic of image quality improvement value propositions is likely to emerge.
